Burma trail, initiatives course, rogaining, low ropes… these were just a few of the action-packed workshops that put Canteen Leaders’ skills to the test during our national Leadership Camp this May!
Youth leadership is central to who we are, what we do, and how we do it. Rangatahi can participate in our leadership programmes, roles, and activities through their hub (North, Central, South). Each hub has a leadership group that meets regularly, in-person and via Zoom, to work together on peer support activities, raising support for Canteen, and sharing ideas and feedback on a range of topics. Canteen Leaders act as ambassadors, advise on services, help run events and programmes, and can apply to become Board Directors.
Leadership Camp takes place at the beginning of each year to allow our leaders across Aotearoa an opportunity to meet their peers and start developing the skills they’ll be learning more about throughout the year. With a strong focus on team building and understanding their unique leadership styles, the workshops brought out competitive streaks, hard work, organisation – but above all, a sense of connection.
It wasn’t all go go go though, leaders also participated in important sessions on self-reflection and self-care. Learning more about their peers and supporting each other. Amongst all the action there were unlimited opportunities to take in the breathtaking views offered by the special location of Living Springs in Christchurch.
