I got that sinking feeling
At just 19 years old, Amos’s sister Shoshannah was diagnosed with cancer. Amos said “I knew it was a huge deal for her, but I didn’t really know how it would affect me. I remember at the time she was diagnosed I got that sinking feeling of what now; there were so many questions that flooded my mind, but I found it very difficult to ask them.”
Amos’s family life changed immediately with his Mum taking time off work to look after Shoshannah and their Dad going back and forth between the hospital and home. Amos and his brother looked after one another while their parents were away at the hospital.
After meeting a CanTeen support worker in hospital, Shoshannah pushed for Amos to join CanTeen and attend the upcoming summer camp with others his age and in a similar boat. She didn’t want her siblings to miss out on some much-needed recreation and respite time during such a pivotal time in their lives.
Amos told us “My first CanTeen event was a get together at the Wellington branch and I was going to look after my sister and check she was okay. But everyone was so nice and welcoming and then the camp was one of the best times of my life where everyone just understood what I was going through. I was hooked. At CanTeen I’m able to relax and have fun with other young people who I’ve made lifelong and real connections with.”
