Meet the Team – Anna

Anna studied hard at university and said it was “worth it! Now I get to work one-on-one with young people to help them through challenges, whether that is their own cancer or a loved one’s cancer. Being ‘let in’ to a person’s life is pretty special.

Every young person that walks through the doors of CanTeen is inspiring in their own way. They are willing to be vulnerable, which takes guts; they are self-aware, open, and courageous.

I am blown away by how selfless and resilient our young people can be too, even when facing their biggest cancer battle yet. Two young people (aged 20 and 15) I’ve worked with were described as pillars of strength to whanau and friends, at a time when they too were truly suffering; such strength and love in a time of crisis is inspiring and is something I’ll keep with me.

A Psychosocial Support Worker can be that one person outside of somebody’s inner circle, that will listen and support with no judgement. Being a youthful team means we develop strong connections with our members, too. Hearing that you are the only person a member feels they can open up to, and that you’ve helped them ‘more than you’ll ever know’ – that’s what keeps us going.

CanTeen Psychosocial Support Workers supported by Joyce Fisher Charitable Trust.
