Claudine Young as Chief Executive Officer

Claudine Young has been announced as the new Chief Executive Officer of CanTeen, the New Zealand organisation supporting young people aged 13-24 living with cancer.

Claudine has been acting Chief Executive for CanTeen since November last year and was CanTeen’s General Manager of Members Services for the three years prior to that. In those three years, Claudine led a revitalisation of CanTeen’s services nationwide, ensuring world-class support to young New Zealanders dealing with cancer and an extension of CanTeen’s support to young people dealing with their parent’s cancer.

Ms Young has over 20 years’ experience in the not for profit sector, both in New Zealand and the UK, with a strong focus on the delivery of high quality social services.

Dion Mortensen, CanTeen’s board chair, is confident this appointment will provide the leadership to achieve CanTeen’s mission of ensuring no young person faces cancer alone and the experience to engage the hearts and minds of the generous community CanTeen depends on.

“CanTeen is the only organisation in New Zealand supporting young people in this age group living with cancer and our ambition is to be there for every single young person whose life has been turned upside down by cancer. In her three years at CanTeen, Claudine has demonstrated the skill and experience we need to fulfil our mission and, importantly, a genuine belief in CanTeen’s youth-led culture. I look forward to working with Claudine in her role as Chief Executive.”

Claudine Young says, “I know CanTeen, the young people we support and the importance of an organisation such as ours in the community. I am thrilled to take on the role of Chief Executive permanently and look forward to working with the members, staff and our community partners to grow CanTeen’s impact and to ensure CanTeen advocates strongly for a change NZ’s youth cancer survival statistics, which unfortunately lag behind the rest of the world.”

Dr Mark Winstanley, specialist Pediatric Oncologist and CanTeen board member, said of the decision to appoint Ms Young, “It was a natural succession to appoint Claudine as Chief Executive, due to the amazing growth of professionalism of CanTeen’s services under Mrs. Young’s leadership over the past three years. Her commitment to drive change in NZ’s youth cancer survival statistics and quality of care will ensure CanTeen continues to provide a strong, experienced voice in Adolescent and Young Adult cancer services in New Zealand.”
