Christmas stockings with a twist
Design by Rachel Allan
I joined CanTeen as a sibling member in 2007 when my big brother
was diagnosed with a brain tumour. In January 2010, after a
short and brave battle, Ben passed away. The transition from having
a wonderful big brother, to being an only child has been the
hardest part. CanTeen has been the best support I could ever ask
for.
I have never felt more understood and accepted than when I am at
CanTeen. The underlying knowledge that everyone has 'been there,
done that' makes CanTeen a safe place to be yourself. I have
learnt so much about me and don't believe I would be the person I
am today without CanTeen. I never thought it was possible to laugh
as much as we do at CanTeen.
Stockings have always been an important part of our family
Christmas. The Gumboot is a symbol of rural New Zealand and shares
similarities with the Christmas stocking. I thought it captured our
Kiwi humour.
Kiwi holding a bauble
Designed by Mikaela Marshall
My cancer journey started in October 2007 when my younger sister
was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia).
CanTeen has provided me with light in the dark experience of
cancer. CanTeen has also given me the strength to find something
positive out of every situation I am faced with.
The natural New Zealand environment inspires me and I love
working with different paint applications. I feel a Kiwi with a
bauble captures the essence of a Kiwi Christmas.

I was diagnosed with an Osteosarcoma just below my left knee in
2003 when I was 15 years old. I underwent nine months of
chemotherapy and had a knee and tibia replacement.
CanTeen activities and camps are where you go to be replenished.
CanTeen means a place you can talk, be silent, scream, yell ,
listen, laugh, whisper, cry, meet new people, reconnect with old
ones, act silly, reflect on things, let stuff go, gain knowledge,
learn skills, breathe, trust, be honest, maintain your
secrets, and best of all be yourself when you just can't do it
anywhere else.
I wanted a subtle design that was uniquely New Zealand. The tiki
is hidden within the hook and koru designs with the blues of the
water (wai) and greens of the land (whenua) creating the
picture.

I'm 17 now however was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukaemia) at the age of 13. I had treatment for eight
months, but was told that the cancer was still there, meaning I had
a high risk of relapsing. Unable to have a bone marrow transplant,
I continued treatment with even more intensive chemotherapy. Even
though my treatment was really tough I can now look back on the
journey and say I am thankful, for it gave me the opportunity to
really appreciate life.
CanTeen means a lot to me, but mostly it means I am able to meet
other people who have been through similar life experiences to me,
things I thought no one would understand. I am able to share
my journey and not be embarrassed or feel out of place because
everyone at CanTeen understands.
Santa chilling on the beach with his Kiwis captures my thoughts
on what a New Zealand Summer Christmas is all about.
Member Reflection
Designed by Munrith Longe Singh
In 2004 at the age of 14 I was diagnosed with a benign brain
tumour called Craniopharyngioma. Following surgery I underwent
radiotherapy. All my current scans show a positive result, however
I constantly live with pain which I experience daily.
If CanTeen did not exist, I would probably drown in self-pity.
CanTeen has helped me 'live life' and 'keep moving on'. CanTeen is
my energy, my motivation and most importantly my guardian angel.
Never in my life did I expect to be diagnosed with a brain tumour -
but when I was, CanTeen was and still is there to support me and my
siblings.
I wanted to design a card for all cancer patients that depicted
a calm spiritual scene.
