BMT is the transfusion of healthy bone marrow, which can come
from a patient while in remission, siblings or an eligible
donor.
BMT is a lengthy and isolating treatment method that requires
several months of hospitalization. Conditioning treatment, which
may include intensive chemotherapy and total-body radiotherapy, is
first administered to kill all of the cancer cells in the body.
Then, healthy bone marrow is given to the patient intravenously
through a central line.
I thought having a BMT was so serious. In reality it
was actually quite straight forward and not as awful as I had
envisioned.
