Dealing with sports and hobbies

Keeping yourself occupied with the things that you love to do is a great coping strategy to relieve stress and enjoy yourself.

If you are experiencing a lot of fatigue or physical and emotional ill health, you may find it harder to participate in these activities. Some young people living with cancer find that they have to make some adjustments to the level of participation in their much loved sports or hobbies. This does not mean you will have to stop participating, but that you may need to take it easy with how often and how hard you participate.

Try some of these ideas

  • Try an activity or sport that is similar, but slightly less physical.
  • Still participate, but take more breaks, or play for a shorter time period.
  • Try new activities or sports that you have always been interested in but haven’t had the time to do. You never know you may find something else that you are really good at.
  • Set some short term, realistic goals for you to maintain your interest and focus.
  • Attend a CanTeen camp or join another group that provides a wide range of active and passive activities for you and other young people to enjoy.
